Top 10 Most Common Behaviors in a Classroom
As a teacher, you are exposed to a variety of behaviors throughout a day in the classroom. I feel as though it is important that you are aware of what I see to be the most frequent behaviors, and know how to address and manage them accordingly.
1) Defiance
• Behavior chart
• Use a timer
• Break directions down into steps and have the students repeat the students aloud
2) Bringing outside objects into the classroom
• Take away object and give it back at the end of the day
• If lost from misuse, use a point system so they can earn it back
• Have the student place the object in their desk/backpack
3) Inappropriate comments/disrespect
• Have the student think about his/her actions and reevaluate their choice
• Behavior chart
• Say/write two nice things for every mean thing said to someone
4. Stretching the truth to get what they want
• Not give them the response/attention they seek
• Respond to the student in a way that fits their exaggeration
• Read them the story “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”
5. Forgetting to do homework
• Give them a homework chart to earn stickers
• Token economy
• Have the parent sign a planner/homework to ensure that the student has completed it
6. Homesickness/crying
• Homesick juice/medicine
• Have the student write a letter home to a family member
• Provide distractions when the student is upset
7. Tattling
• Tattle phone
• Tattle Monster boxes
• 5-minute tattle time—allow the students 5 minutes after recess to share any concerns that have arisen for the teacher to listen to and/or sort out
8. Bullying
• Use plan B with students
• Role playing bullying in class for all students to understand what it’s like on both ends
• Separate the perpetrator from the victim

• Lose privileges/time with the item
• Timer for each person’s use
