Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
ADHD is under the category of Other Heath Impairments (OHI) as defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Below are a few accommodations and techniques that were found to be most beneficial for those with ADHD. Just like any other student it is important to remember that some of these techniques may be effective, while others may not. Therefore, it is the teachers responsibility to be patient and continue to try new things in order to meet the needs of the student and bring out the best results possible.
1) Allow the students to use fidgets in the classroom (small non-disruptive objects students can play with in their hands to get rid of energy)
2) Split up assignments into smaller segments to make them more manageable.
3) Use hands on activities so the students can move around and be active learners.
4) Allow students to sit on things other than seats (ie: yoga ball, chair with wheels, bean bag chair, etc...)
5) Ample break time for students to get up and move around from their seat
6) Give student a daily agenda to fill out to help them stay more organized and know what they need to do.
7) Teach organizational skills
8) Do station work
